Stop in the Bo-Kaap (Cape Malay Quarter) for photographs with colourful houses, carrying great historical significance. Found at the foot of Signal Hill, the Bo-Kaap’s origins date back to the 1760s when numerous rental houses were built and leased to slaves. They were known as Cape Malays, who were brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa. The colour of each house is due to the fact that while on the lease, all the houses had to be white. When this rule was abolished, the slaves were allowed to buy the properties, and all the houses were painted bright colours to express their freedom
