The The Archaeological mission of Sakkara unearthed new burial shafts with colourful and intact coffins over
2,500 years old, and wooden coloured and gilded statuettes.
A collection of 59 statuettes of Ptah-Soker, the main god of Saqqara
Necropolis, were found along with a beautifully carved 35cm tall bronze
statuette of god Nefertum, inlaid with precious stones. On its base is written
the name of its owner, Priest Badi-Amun. Collections of amulets and ushabti
figurines were also unearthed.
Sakkara, 32 kilometers south of the capital, is
one of the world’s most important archaeological sites, designated a UNESCO
World Heritage site in the 1970s. Part of the necropolis of Egypt’s ancient
city of Memphis, it is famous for its 5,000-year-old Step pyramid of Zoser,
which has recently undergone around $10 million restoration
