As a port city, Colombo is busting and busy city conserving the heritage of the past and living with today modern, visit the historical places such as the old market area called Pettah, where you can see the Red Mosque and busy street vendors, see the temple on a lake and continue to explore the colonial style of Colombo city council and the surrounding park
Pick up from your hotel in Colombo. Pettah is an area near the Colombo Fort built by the Dutch colonizers of the island. This was the main business district during the British period and you will still see the old bazaar and colonial building such as the Post Office & Red Mosque. The area is still vibrant and busy with street vendors
Continue your journey towards the new Colombo city area, here you will see the Town Hall building, this old building resembles the ‘White House’ and is still in use. You will also see Colombo’s largest park – the Viharamaha Devi Park. The park is named after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugamunu. The park features include a large Buddha statue and a series of water fountains in a beautiful tree lined park. In the same area you can see the Nelum theatre – a arts center designed to resemble a lotus flower
Visit the Independence Square Memorial – a pavilion built to commemorate Sri Lanka’s independence from British colonial rule in 1948. In the same vicinity you can see the Bandaranayke Memorial International Conference Hall, a gift from the Chinese Government to Mme Sirimavo Bandaranayke the 1st woman Prime Minister of the world also on view is a statue of Lord Buddha
Have lunch at a local restaurant to taste traditional Sri Lankan food. Then continue to visit a local shopping mall where you can find a variety of local craft shops – batik cloths, wooden sculptures and local gem vendors. At sunset visit the Galle Face Green – a promenade along the beach where you can see the old Galle Face hotel as well as the new skyline of Colombo with Colombo’s new towers, at the end of the tour, Drop-off at your hotel in Colombo
